Do not let the intention of your aspiration veer to other-than-Him. Hopes can go no further than the Ever-Generous. Do not ask other-than-Him for what you need since He is the One who will bring it to you. How can other than the One who put it there relieve it?
How can someone who is unable to relieve his own need relieve someone else's It may well be that you are in a bad state - but to keep company with someone worse than you would allow you to see good in yourself. No action from a heart without attachment is insignificant. No action from a heart full of desires is great. Good actions are the results of good states. Good states come from grasping the reality of the stations where you alight.
Do not give up invocation of Allah because you are not present with Allah in it. It is worse to forget to invoke Him than to be inattentive while invoking Him. He might raise you up from invocation with heedlessness to invocation with wakeful attention, and from invocation with wakeful attention to invocation with presence, and from invocation with presence to invocation with withdrawal from all that is other than the Invoked.
That is not difficult for Allah. View all 7 comments. One of the best things about this book is that to contains the original Arabic as well as the translation of the aphorisms. A great insight to the original classical tradition of Sufism from one of the greatest scholars of the tradition: Ibn Ata'illah Al-Iskandri.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in the founding principles of Islamic mysticism. I enjoyed this compilation.
Seeking to order them by category is unique and could be helpful for some readers. English translations are good and clear. A beautiful book of gentle reminders, organised to help us reconsider our relationship with God and to engender gratitude within us. A turning point in my life. It is truly a beautiful translation. The only drawback is that it speaks of "union" and the like, which is a loaded translation of the term wusul that more accurately translates as "arrival". The only thing that I fear is that some of the language will lead people to mistakenly attribute beliefs to Ibn Ata Illah that he does not hold but that seems to happen even with otherwise well-intended people who can read the original Arabic.
Because of the potential theological implications of such a term, I was tempted to give it four stars. But after reading a recent new translation, that would seem to be nitpicking. This particular translation is far far superior and far far more eloquent in my estimation.
And Victor Danner's choosing to include the transliteration of key terms only adds to the reverence. That this is such a key text in the Shadhili Order, famous world-wide, praised even by people who do not consider themselves Sufis, and there still has not been a commentary of which there are literally hundreds translated with it is slightly depressing.

It deals with issues related to tawhid, ethnics, day to day conduct and much more. Took a long time to read cos each and every line of the book needs deep contemplation and attention. It needs to be wisely read to be wisely understood. Each word, each letter in each word has a meaning. This book illuminates me, reminds me of how our relation with God should be.
It's the nest book to rfine the soul and highlight the Godly side of the soul! Readers also enjoyed. About Ibnu Atha'illah.
