This is a masterfully crafted, rich feast of a read. In the solemn quiet of that early morning, Celestina wordlessly gives Paloma a set of golden hoop earrings. And so the mystery begins. She also clearly did extensive research. Not only is the story satisfying, but so is the history lesson.
This account will certainly encourage you to reflect on that further. Alexandra tells the story from three points of view while working between two different eras. Plenty of experienced writers would falter with this. But instead of rehashing prior scenes, Alexandra moves from each point of view to the next in a way that seamlessly moves the story forward.
This was definitely a book that I was sorry to see end. View 1 comment. Jul 18, Kiwileese rated it it was amazing. I listened to this wonderful book as an audio book, i cannot recommend this story enough. One of the best stories ive read in a long time Beautifully read by Caroline Lee who is a gifted actor and narrator who has worked extensively in theatre, film, and television as well as having narrated many audiobooks. Jun 24, Euphemia rated it it was amazing. What can I say about this book!!
This is the 2nd time I have read it and I loved it even more. I can almost forgive Belinda Alexandra for white gardenia which I found extremely boring. Golden earrings is the story of Paloma, an aspiring ballerina in the 70s Paris and her Spanish ancestors. Through twists and turns she tries to unveil the story of a ghost that visits her and gives her a pair of golden earrings. At the same time she's trying to cope with the loss of her mother and the attitude of h What can I say about this book!!
At the same time she's trying to cope with the loss of her mother and the attitude of her father as well as the judges of the Paris Opera who she did not impress the first time she tried to join the corps de ballet. I felt so moved by the story that takes place in the 30s in Barcelona and was in tears by the end of the book.
I could empathize with every character, even if they had completely different points of view, their respective actions were justified. I found the atrocities of the civil war quite appalling at times, but I understand that the descriptions had to be raw to make the reader as well as the main character Paloma realize that nothing should be taken for granted.
In a nutshell this is a compelling read about well-kept secrets, sacrifice, betrayal and redemption. Highly recommended!!! Golden Earrings is a historical family saga of love, honor, and betrayal. Paloma Batton was happy and contented with her life as a student of the School of the Paris Opera Ballet when someone leaves her a pair of golden earrings. Paloma Batton then started to explore her family's Spanish heritage and found out more than she thought.
The readers of Golden Earrings will follow Paloma Batton to see what the secrets her family was hiding. I enjoy reading this book. Golden Earrings is well written an Golden Earrings is a historical family saga of love, honor, and betrayal. Golden Earrings is well written and researched by Belinda Alexandra. I like the way Belinda Alexandra incorporated the historical facts into the plot of Gold Earrings.
From the start of Golden Earrings, it captured me with the settings, intrigue and the characters of this book. Belinda Alexandra did a great job of portraying her characters and the way they interact with each other. At times while reading Golden Earrings is made me sad in what some of the characters had to endure during the Spanish Civil War. Golden Earrings highlights the dedication you need to become a prima donna ballerina.
I recommend this book. I chose to read this as I had many years ago read and loved Wild Lavender. I also adore armchair travelling with novels set abroad. Golden Earrings is set in Spain and France so that was another tick in the box before I'd read the first page.
Golden Earrings is an epic tale of family, love and betrayal. Paloma is a ballet dancer living in Paris. An encounter with a ghost leaves her with a pair of earrings and a craving to learn of her Spanish heritage. We follow Paloma on her quest to find the I chose to read this as I had many years ago read and loved Wild Lavender.
We follow Paloma on her quest to find the truth of her family's involvement in the Spanish Civil War and their connection to La Rusa - the world's most formidable flamenco star. The family and character connections are extremely well written as are the dance scenes. Last year in Valencia I saw an amateur flamenco show - it was breath-taking.
The drive and the passion of the dance really come through in Belinda's writing. Oct 01, Belinda rated it really liked it. Would give 4. Really enjoyed this. It took me a little bit to get into but this always seems to be the case for me for books with historical settings, especially when I am not very familiar with the context in this case during the Spanish Revolution.
Once it grabbed me, it grabbed me, as her books always do. Interesting story - my first time learning about Spanish history at the time of their revolution. This was a multi-generational story told by the viewpoints of 3 different women, jumping back and forth between present day and the past. Includes a mystery too. It got a bit slow at the end and I had to increase my audio speed to nearly 1. Jun 09, Kamilla rated it it was amazing.
What a fantastic book!
If you are interested in Spanish history 20 th century this may interest you. But be warned, as an audio book this was difficult to follow as Caroline Lee's voice did not provide enough contrast Very nice story and an excellent lesson in Spanish history. Maybe just a bit longer than it needed to be. I was ready to wrap it up near the end.
