War is imminent in central Europe, but the company of a special tomcat, a guardian ange. War is imminent in central Europe, but the company of a special tomcat, a guardian angel of sorts, helps him to overcome all dangers. In Bucharest, Joseph will meet and fall in love with an attractive nanny, while the prince distances himself from the dentist, seeking to erase all stains from his past, particularly his involvement with a beautiful blind prostitute.
But unbeknownst to him, she has given birth to a baby boy with a suspiciously aristocratic nose. Nations are invented and dissolved overnight, kingdoms are for sale, Bucharest grows from a muddy pigsty into an elegant capital city, and love turns everything upside down in The Days of the King. By turn purple prosed, info-dumped, and downright slapstick. The only thing for which I decided to remove the last star from the rating is the prose style of this contemporary writer. He should really benefit more if decides to break down page long paragraphs in several smaller ones.

But I appreciated his innovations in this novel, like the cat which is a character in the book and its poems wrote in the chairs' tapestry.
This is a book that has three main aspects - the historical situation of the Romanian Principalities from their union in , to Carol's accession in to his becoming King of Romania in , the atmosphere of Bucharest and to a lesser extent the rest of the country at the times and the actual storyline of Joseph Strauss' life as he follows the prince from Germany to Romania to treat his teeth.

The book is superb on the first two but doesn't quite succeed on the third count though not reading the Romanian original, but only the English translation, I am not sure if it's the translation, the author's original choices or simply that his convoluted Romanian prose does not translate well in the 21st century English and the result comes as saying simple things in ten phrases rather than one which jars badly on occasion.
As noted above i have no idea of the precise reason but I incline to believe that it is simply a case of language incompatibility and if the author were to write directly in English he would tell the story quite differently than in this translation that tries to be lavish in language and succeeds only to be laborious and quite dense in a negative sense on many occasions.
All in all The Days of the King B is a book that is excellent historical fiction and mediocre at best literature. Albo jeszcze nie Trzymam kciuki za Angelusa! Apr 26, Mallory rated it really liked it. It was a quick, fun read taking place in the mid-late s in Bucharest. The main character is a fictional dentist who as a free wheeling bachelor turned family man is in orbit around the real Carol I of Romania. I knew next to nothing about Romania previously, and now know a little bit more.
I would love to read from this author again, and I want to read more about the present day country. Nov 13, Alina rated it did not like it. In all fairness, I did not manage to finish it - the way it was written did not resonate with me - too long descriptions and overly artistic use of words.
I would have enjoyed more focus on the story rather on the language wrapping.
There are notes at the end of the book that explain the historical and cultural context of the novel but in an ereader without a proper table of contents built in, it's damn near impossible to flip between the notes and the text.
Therefore, after reading and re-reading the same passages for clarity, I started skimming. When the skimming didn't seem to hinder my understanding any, I decided to stop reading.
Days of the King is best suited for readers who have a physical copy, and patience. An understanding of Prussian and Romanian history will help too.
