Different treatments are available and outlined for stainless steels to remove free surface iron or passivate. The standard proscribes a number of methods that can be used to assess that passivation has been effective. Two such methods are available through Lucideon.

The primary purpose of stainless still is to avoid corrosion, however, residual surface iron will still corroded if present.

Confirmation of the removal of the surface iron through passivation is essential to ensure that the parts or components will perform satisfactorily. Both Practice B and D are visual tests to assess the presence of incomplete passivation. Samples are passed only if no rust or staining or copper deposits are observed. Get in touch. Find out more. Passivation of stainless steel is a process that removes free iron from the surface of a stainless component and at the same time promotes the formation of a thin, dense oxide protective barrier. APT provides both competitive high-volume commercial stainless steel passivation as well as precision medical passivation of titanium and other medical-grade alloys including cobalt chromium, MP35N and LVM, utilizing ultrasonic systems for demanding applications within the medical and dental industries. This is in stark contrast to iron oxide red rust that forms on plain carbon steel products. Iron oxide is a loose, scaly oxide that easily falls away to allow the formation of additional iron oxide, thereby perpetuating the corrosion reaction.

Active view current version of standard. Other Historical Standards. More A It includes recommendations and precautions for descaling, cleaning, and passivation of stainless steel parts. It includes several alternative tests, with acceptance criteria, for confirmation of effectiveness of such treatments for stainless steel parts. Appendix X1 gives some nonmandatory information and provides some general guidelines regarding the selection of passivation treatment appropriate to particular grades of stainless steel. It makes no recommendations regarding the suitability of any grade, treatment, or acceptance criteria for any particular application or class of applications.
