In Sub-saharan Africa where the etiologies of chronic liver disease are dominated by hepatitis B and C virus, we report in Senegal two observations of primary biliary cirrhosis PBC particular because of the associated pathologies and of their fatal evolution.
In the first case, a diffuse lichen planus was known before the diagnosis of PBC and ulcerative colitis in the form of pancolitis was found in the course of the PBC. In the second case, PBC was diagnosed in a patient with diabetes type 2 associated with hypercholesterolemia. Despite the UDCA treatment in the two cases, the evolution was made towards cirrhosis with arisen by severe liver failure with hepatic encephalopathy.
PBC is often associated with other autoimmune disease contributing to aggravate the prognosis especially in southern countries where liver transplant is not yet available. This is a preview of subscription content, log in to check access.

Ce sont des maladies de la femme de la quarantaine. Regarding the definition The primary biliary cirrhosis PBC — autoimmune hepatitis AIH overlap syndrome is defined by the simultaneous or consecutive association of at least two of three diagnostic criteria usually recognized in both pathologies. Diagnostic criteria In most of the cases, the characteristics of these diseases are concomitant from the start at the time of diagnosis. Diagnosis is based on the combination of clinical, biologic, immunologic and histological arguments. Histologically, the characteristic lesions of each of the diseases are usually combined. Treatment modalities The optimal treatment is not yet well codified.
