There was no damage to the camper, but my truck got totalled because a tree fell on it. Story continues below. They are able to enjoy it through the exceptional floor-to-ceiling windows of the Great Room in their custom-built, 3,square-foot cottage, perched high on a cliff above the lake.
We love it. They bought the property to eventually retire there, but in the meantime, they were having the time of their lives. The people who live next door, Ed and Carol, they bought one lot and we bought the other one. They had very positive things to say about Cedarland and when we watched them build, we could tell they were a quality builder.
From planning to completion, the team at Cedarland paid close attention to the needs and wants of the family. Meticulous attention to detail can be seen in every aspect of the cottage, from the quality of materials and architecture to minute touches such as shaker framing around each door and window, timber-frame accents, and refreshing colours.
Arguably, one of the best parts was that Cedarland came in on time and on budget, starting the project in April and having the cottage ready by Christmas of that year as promised. The open-concept design of the main level allows stunning views of the lake and property from every principal room. Large, squared windows with straight lines are complemented by curved transoms, above, and draw in not only views of the water, but of the tall trees that surround the cottage. Nowhere in the cottage are the views more breathtaking than in the Great Room with windows almost touching the peak of its foot vaulted ceiling.
This room boasts smooth walls in a soothing pewter colour that are offset by white textured tongue-and-groove pine on the ceiling, as well as a dark timber frame design. Sliding glass doors lead to a foot deck with tempered glass rail that runs from the sunroom at one end of the cottage to the master suite at the other end, and provides unfettered views.
A floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace with stone hearth, dark wooden mantel and large squared firebox in black conveniently provides warmth and ambiance to the room with the click of a button. Two comfortable couches and plush chairs makes this a popular gathering space when entertaining friends and family in the winter. From this angle, miles of frozen lake can be seen through the snow-kissed trees giving unique views of the area where the family will often go with chairs and refreshments to sit on the ice and enjoy the peace.
Steps from the Great Room, the open-concept kitchen is another gathering space when company comes with a large, eight-by-four-foot island that encompasses a beverage fridge, wine rack, microwave and plenty of storage. The smooth quartz counter in white with grey tones sits atop a charcoal grey base and has a sunken grey granite prep sink. On the opposite end there is enough room for four medium-backed stools kitty-corner to each other to encourage conversation.
The grey of the island is offset by the custom shaker cabinetry in a creamy vanilla colour, as well as the shiny white subway tile on the backsplash.
Nearby, a spacious laundry room and pantry is hidden behind a sliding pocket door. The kitchen is also highlighted by vaulted ceilings in white tongue-and-groove pine although lower than the Great Room and large sliding doors with transom eyebrow window in the eating area.
Here, a custom hemlock dining table, made from the threshing floor of a barn, seats 10 people very easily. It was a special purchase to not only accommodate large family meals, but to ensure everyone can have a seat at the games table. We got that size on purpose. The sunroom features a wider-plank pine with a honey-coloured stain on the floor and well-insulated walls. Despite the luxury of the rest of the cottage, the sunroom is where Charlotte and Wes spend most of their time inside.
In fall, winter and spring, a corner wood-burning stove set atop a ceramic hearth pad warms the cosy room, while the windows surrounding the room allow refreshing cross breezes in the summer. Washed white pine on the walls and ceiling brighten the space while still giving a rustic feel.
From this room, there is a door to the main deck, as well as a door to a covered porch with barbecue and stylish seating to enjoy views at the side of the cottage. We may have built a little bit earlier than we would have planned but time goes fast. When the cottage is bustling with company, Charlotte and Wes have a quiet retreat of their own to enjoy peace and quiet. Around the corner from the Great Room, at the end of a petite hallway, the master suite offers a soothing place to escape the noise.
A wall of windows, featuring a glass door, look out over the water and capture the surrounding views. A vaulted ceiling allows for the transom to draw in exceptional sunlight, while two smaller windows on each side of the bed open to bring in breezes and the fresh scent of the forest.
A walk-in closet with pocket door keeps clothing and accessories hidden from view. The large ensuite is highlighted by a corner stand-alone glass shower with grey porcelain tile on the walls up to the ceiling. The same polished chrome that is found on the rain and hand-held shower heads is also used with the soaker tub and fixtures on the double vanity.
The floors in here are textured white and grey tile, which adds a rustic edge to the more modern vanity flanked by dark grey cabinetry.
Along the small hallway beside the Great Room there is also a full guest washroom and guest bedroom specifically earmarked for their parents. The lower level is the lair of the younger family members with another two bedrooms, plus office, with a living room and full washroom. This space also accommodates the main entrance to the cottage, with a large closet to store boots and coats.
Heated luxury vinyl plank flooring flows from the foyer throughout this walkout level. All bedrooms are insulated for sound proofing and boast extra deep window sills due to the insulated concrete form ICF foundation used in the construction of the cottage.
