Directory of Open Access Journals Sweden. Dinis-Ribeiro, M. Atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and epithelial dysplasia of the stomach are common and are associated with an increased risk for gastric cancer. In the absence of guidelines, there is wide disparity in the management of patients with these premalignant conditions. A multidisciplinary group of 63 experts from 24 countries developed these recommendations by means of repeat online voting and a meeting in June in Porto, Portugal.

The recommendations emphasize the increased cancer risk in patients with gastric atrophy and metaplasia, and the need for adequate staging in the case of high grade dysplasia, and they focus on treatment and surveillance indications and methods. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas.

Full Text Available Background: there has not been a validated questionnaire available in Spanish to evaluate patient satisfaction with gastrointestinal endoscopy. Our aim was to evaluate the external validity and internal consistency of the Spanish version of a questionnaire on patient satisfaction with gastrointestinal endoscopy elaborated by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Design: prospective questionnaire validation study. Patients and methods: a total of consecutive patients referred to two different hospitals for endoscopy were interviewed by telephone. Internal consistency was studied using Cronbach's alfa test and corrected item-total correlations CITC. External validity was determined using a mailed questionnaire completed by patients -correlations between telephone and postal responses were calculated, as well as the correlation with the total score obtained.

Weighted kappa values for the same questionnaire items performed by telephone or mail varied between 0. Total score correlation was 0. Internal consistency and external validity were not affected by differences in the administration of the questionnaire mail or by telephone, different interviewers, type of endoscopy, or source of patients.

Conclusions: the Spanish version of the ASGE questionnaire on satisfaction with endoscopy is valid, reliable, and reproducible.

Full Text Available Introduction: the endoscopic diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with bleeding peptic ulcer is limited by a decreased sensitivity in standard invasive tests, rapid urease test and histology. There is controversy about the convenience of using one, neither, or both diagnostic tests. Aims: to evaluate the results of simultaneously performed rapid urease test and histology in the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection H.

Patients and methods: we included patients, 98 male and 75 female, with an average age of 62 years , with upper gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to duodenal ulcer or gastric ulcer 58, diagnosed within 24 hours after hospital admission.

None of the patients had received treatment for H. In cases with a negative urease test and histology, a 13C urea breath test was performed. Infection was considered present when at least one invasive test or the breath test was positive, whereas both invasive tests and the breath test had to be negative to establish an absent infection.

One patient was excluded from each group after allocation. Full Text Available Systematic examination of the upper respiratory and digestive tracts URDT was performed in a group of 80 paracoccidioidomycosis PCM patients submitted to post-treatment follow-up ranging from 8 months to 17 years.

Mucosae of the URDT had been involved prior to specific treatment in 74 patients, distributed as follows: oropharynx, 50 41 alone, 7 in association with the larynx, and 2 with the nasal mucosa; larynx, 30 23 alone and 7 in association; and nasal mucosa, 3 1 alone and 2 in association. Inactive lesions were observed in all the 50 patients with lesions of the oropharynx, 3 of whom with deforming scars 1 with retraction of the tongue and 2 with narrowing of the oral orifice.

One case presented a destructive lesion, with perfuration of the palate. Of the other 46 cases, examination showed nacreous white striated scars which were nearly imperceptible in some cases and in others displayed partial retraction of anatomical structures without any alteration of their features. Patients presented a high rate of missing teeth. In 3 patients with involvement of the nasal mucosa, none of whom presented active PCM lesions, 2 still had nasal voices.

In 30 patients with lesions of the larynx, 1 suffered a relapse of PCM and 2 developed epidermoid carcinoma. Of the other 27 cases, none of whom had active PCM lesions, 15 presented dysphonia, 3 were tracheotomized, and 9 were asymptomatic. Lesiones bucales relacionadas con las enfermedades digestivas. Many of the lesions of the mucosa in the oral cavity are related to anatomical and functional disorders of the organs of the digestive system.

Some of them are part of the clinical picture of the entity and others appear as complications of them. Generally, they have an immunological, nutritional, or deficiency origin. These lesions are difficult to be treated and that's why it is important to know the clinical characteristics making easy an adequate interpretation, and to follow a suitable therapeutic conduct at the same time.

An updated review of the semiological features of the oral lesions corresponding to the clinical picture of diverse digestive diseases is presented, so that the general physicians, clinicians, stomatologists and gastroenterologists be able to diagnose and give a better guidance and treatment to the patients. High digestive hemorrhage has a peculiar significance in elderly because of it is an event putting quickly at risk the life.

In elderly, the high incidence of associated osteomyoarticular and cardiovascular diseases that also fitting the drugs ingestion, e. The commonest cause of hemorrhage is the gastric ulcer. Foram examinados 60 peixes com peso variando entre 86 e 1. Full Text Available Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a safe, efficient technique with minimal complications, and a useful diagnostic tool for the pediatric population. Under ideal conditions endoscopies for children should be performed by experienced pediatric endoscopists.

In this study we report our experience with pediatric endoscopy at the general adult endoscopy unit in our hospital.

Our goal is to quantify the number of endoscopies performed in children, as well as their indications and findings, the type of sedation or anesthesia used, and the time waiting for the test to occur. Our experience demonstrates that endoscopists in a general adult gastroenterology department, working together with pediatricians, may perform a relevant number of endoscopies in children in a fast, safe, effective manner.

Acute lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage originating in the small intestine Hemorragia digestiva baja severa originada en el intestino delgado. We report the case of a year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with symptoms of hyperthermia associated with encephalopathy and disseminated intravascular coagulation DIC after prolonged exposure to sunlight.

He presented hematemesis, after which he was diagnosed with having a bruising of the esophagus that took up the upper and lower thirds, there being no other lesions in the stomach or duodenum. After supportive treatment and following the resolution of the underlying pathology, the endoscopy-revealed injuries healed with a complete normalization of the esophageal mucosa. Esophageal submucosal bruising is an exceptional cause of hematemesis in serious heatstroke not previously described in the literature.

An analysis is made of the way the health personal should act in the presence of an acute disease, such as digestive hemorrhage, of its impact on the physical and psychical spheres of the patients and their relatives, as well as of the disorders it may cause in the man-community relationship. The ethical considerations sustained on evidence-based medicine are very important to attain the recovery of these severe patients and they are the best option for the comprehensive recuperation of the patient's health.

Reflections are made on the concepts of medical ethics that have been considered so far and on those on which our current society is based. Alfaro-Reynoso; C. Velarde-Ruiz Velasco; D. Some of the risk factors for presenting with phlegmonous gastritis are: immunodeficiencies, gastric carcinoma, prior therapeutic endoscopic procedure, oncologic diseases, malnutrition, and the chronic use of glucocorticoids. Clinical symptoms are severe abdominal pain, inability to tolerate food, fever, and chills. A year-old man had a past history of non-atrophic gastritis after endoscopy and associated with Helicobacter pylori , having received eradication treatment one year before. He sought medical attention at our institution for intense epigastric pain of 5-day progression, accompanied by an inability to tolerate food; in the last 24 h he presented with melena and coffee ground vomitus, prompting his arrival at the emergency department. During the medical interview he stated he had eaten spoiled food 8 days prior to his symptom onset. Physical examination revealed diaphoresis, tachycardia, low-grade fever, and normal blood pressure. Superficial palpation produced epigastric pain and no organomegaly.
